A Spread from a Travel Sketchbook
This is the finished spread from a travel sketchbook that I'm working my way through from a 2014 trip to the Boston area, and then on to Europe. Every day from the trip gets its own spread and I wrote notes on sticky notes to remind myself of what I did those days. Somedays I was able to get in a sketch onsite from some part of the day's activities. I do rely heavily on my photographs from the day. I also like to include maps whenever I can and will also draw tickets or passes or receipts to add to the day's events. This particular day was spent in walking around the neighborhood I grew up in, enjoying all the old houses and going to my elementary school. It was also farm share day, so it was a trip out to the farm to pick up the week's bounty for my mom.
Just a regular street scene in Habana Vieja, Cuba
Everywhere I looked in Habana Vieja, there was some interesting detail to explore. It could be a person, an almendron (one of those old American cars), architectural details, urban decay, beautiful color, daily living. This one drawing has all of that. Just on an ordinary street.
My take on Albrecht Dürer's Young Hare
This is my version of Albrecht Dürer's Young Hare from 1502. I don't know how he was able to do the things he was, especially how he colored his hare. However, I had fun with this and enjoyed the process.
A Woman Enjoying the Sun - Castillo de la Real Fuerza, Habana Vieja, Cuba
The woman here had her eyes closed and had her face turned up to the sun. There was lovely light and interesting angles inside this castle or fort. The stone work was fabulous!
A Work in Progress - Castillo de la Real Fuerza
This is a work in progress from Habana Vieja and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza. There are lots of lovely shades and nuances in the stones and I thought I'd play with stippling in some texture before I added color.
People watching at Parque Cristo
I started this drawing one morning in Habana Vieja. It was a drawing morning for the art group I was with. There was so much to see and people to watch. The drawing ended up being more an exercise in detail watching. So much fun!
Cosmos in Havana, Cuba
I found these lovely pink cosmos up in a rooftop planter at the casa particular I was staying at in Habana Vieja, Cuba. I'm pretty sure they are not native flowers to Cuba, but they seem to be thriving in the Cuban climate. This was just a quick sketch with a simple color wash or two of watercolor.
