Drawing Amsterdam Dailies, Day 206. Finished the #gavelsteen (carved stone tablet). I love how there are these tablets all over the city. Too bad it’s hard to find out much about them (in English. My Dutch is very limited.) @daphnys_doodles was kind enough to share what she learned: “Being Dutch I had to look this up. Mister Batenburg was very committed to restoring monuments. When he retired he asked for money to keep on restoring. So much money was donated they were able to buy that building and of course restore it. The gevelsteen is in his honor.” I played with how much to make lighter and what parts to keep dark here. I also tried watercolor over the white gouache which didn’t really work. I ended up using a black pen over the gouache for the lettering. I had gold watercolors and those show up. My silver pencil not so much.
